Soybean Science: Let's Sprout a Soybean!

Primary Life Sciences - In this lesson and activity, students will learn about a soybean seed and it’s role in a soybean plant’s life cycle. There are modifications of the activity provided for grades K-3 to meet each NGSS listed below.

Students will:

  • Use observations to describe what a seed needs to germinate, and what a plant needs to survive. K-LS1-1

  • Make observations to connect a soybean seed to the plant that grows from the seed. 1-LS3-1

  • Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow. 2-LS2-1

  • Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all. 3-LS1-1

  • Be introduced to the process of photosynthesis. 3-LS1-1

  • Develop models to describe that a soybean has a unique and diverse life cycle. 3-LS4-3
