Primary Career Studies/Financial Literacy

Careers

C.P.1 - Identify the reasons why people need to work (e.g., chores, jobs, employment) to meet basic needs and personal goals (e.g., food, clothing, shelter).

C.P.2 - Describe and expose students to different job opportunities that are available in the community (e.g., career day, field trips, virtual field trips, guest speakers).

C.P.3 - Explain how interests, values, and abilities influence career choices.

  • Ask a farmer/agriculture worker to visit a class (could be via teleconference) to talk about why they like and enjoy their job. Many of the farmers in the KFFM Virtual Field Trip Series address this.

C.P.4 - Explain how academic content students learn in school impacts future jobs/careers.

  • Ask a farmer what school subjects they need to know well to do his/her job. Use different lessons to expose students to different farming-related jobs.

Financial Literacy

F.P.1 - Recognize that people need to work to meet basic needs.

F.P.3 - Identify the difference between wants (e.g., skateboard, video games) and needs (e.g., food, clothing, and shelter) and the relationship to consumer decisions.

F.P.4 - Identify why people make financial choices.

  • Discuss why we may want to purchase food directly from farmers in our community – it supports local businesses and ensures those goods will be there in the future. Buying locally also allows consumers to have a relationship with their farmers to know how they produce food and care for the environment. Fresh foods produced locally may also be fresher since they did not have far to travel from the farm to a grocery store. Convenience and cost are also factors. Is buying local food convenient? Cost more or less? These are community/regional issues.
