Kentucky Agriculture & Environment in the Classroom Receives Grant to Support STEM Education from PhRMA

Grant to support efforts to expand STEM offerings to students across Kentucky

Frankfort, KY (January 26, 2022) – The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) today announced an educational grant of $5,000 for Kentucky Agriculture & Environment in the Classroom to support the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs offered to students across Kentucky, joined by Senator Rand Paul and Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles.

PhRMA partnered with Kentucky Agriculture & Environment in the Classroom to bring this vital funding to local students. Kentucky Agriculture & Environment in the Classroom works with agricultural, environmental, and educational partners across the state to produce and distribute Kentucky-based and standards-aligned resources and programs that showcase how Kentucky farmers utilize natural resources to produce sustainable food and renewable goods.

“I want to say thanks to PhRMA for helping increase access to STEM education in Kentucky and for their support of the Kentucky Agriculture & Environment in the Classroom programs,” said Ryan Quarles, Agriculture Commissioner. “We'll be able to bring mobile science labs to even more schools in both urban and rural communities across Kentucky.”

This educational grant will support the Mobile Science Centers, mobile labs that bring hands-on STEM activities to students across Kentucky. The grant will help ensure that 10 new schools across Kentucky will have access to this curriculum enhancing program and help connect students with the skills they need to pursue careers in agriculture.

“There are double the number of jobs in agriculture available than there are qualified people to fill those jobs, so the future of our food, pharmaceuticals, fiber and energy should be on the minds of everyone,” said Jennifer Ewell, Executive Director, Kentucky Agriculture & Environment in the Classroom. “The Mobile Science Activity Centers are a way that we can bring a science lab to students, and they have the opportunity to work on problems that we're all going to be facing in the future.”

“PhRMA represents the country’s top biopharmaceutical research companies that allow the United States to be a leader in innovation, particularly in the fight to combat COVID-19. Programs like this are an excellent way for students to develop an interest in STEM careers. PhRMA is proud to support the Kentucky Agriculture & Environment in the Classroom and their commitment to offering students quality STEM education opportunities,” said PhRMA’s senior director of Public Affairs Reid Porter.
