KyAEC Announces New Teacher Workshops in July

The Kentucky Agriculture and Environment in the Classroom (KyAEC) has announced it will hold two New Teacher Workshops to bring our most popular standards-based lessons to teachers entering the classroom in the 2022/2023 school year.

“While we provide professional development to teachers across the state each year, KyAEC wanted to present our most historically popular lessons to teachers who are just getting started,” said KyAEC Executive Director Jennifer Elwell. “KyAEC and our sponsors will also be providing participating teachers with resources and supplies that are ready to use as soon as they move into their classrooms.”

The 6-hour workshops will be held in Morehead and Elizabethtown to offer regional access. Both workshops will provide similar content including a farm tour. Morehead State University’s Derrickson Agricultural Complex is the setting for the Morehead location. Teachers will visit local farms while attending the workshop at the Hardin County Cooperative Extension Office in Elizabethtown. Specialization tracks will be provided for Career and Technical Education teachers, though KyAEC has not ruled out holding a separate workshop for those educators.

Participants will receive ready-to-use curriculum and lessons aligned to Kentucky Academic Standards:

  • STEM

  • Social Studies

  • ELA & Math

  • Project Based Learning

“Our goal is to equip new teachers with agriculture and environment-based lessons to grow student knowledge in practical subjects,” remarked Elwell. “Those topics include food and fiber production, economics, consumerism, geography, careers, and conservation, but they are also using these subjects to develop their language and math skills.”

Teachers interested in attending must provide a $25 non-refundable deposit for their meal and workshop supplies that will be pre-purchased. Each participant, however, will receive $250 in grade-level appropriate resources to use in their classroom.

New teachers may also want to participate in the Kentucky Farm Bureau Regional Teacher Workshops in June, where different content will be presented. Those dates and locations should be announced soon.
