Reading

Books for group reading are suggested in many lessons. Teachers/educators may ask questions to evaluate student understanding of the texts.

Composition

C.2.1 - Compose opinion pieces, using a combination of writing and digital resources, on topics or texts, with supporting reasons. (NOTE: Students must have the opportunity throughout the year to utilize digital resources, but not every writing experience must utilize those digital resources.)

C.2.2 - Compose informative and/or explanatory texts using writing and digital resources to establish a topic and provide information about the topic. (NOTE: Students must have the opportunity throughout the year to utilize digital resources, but not every writing experience must utilize those digital resources.)

C.2.3 - Compose narratives, using writing and digital resources, to develop real or imagined experiences or multiple events or ideas using effective techniques, descriptive details, and clear sequences. (NOTE: Students must have the opportunity throughout the year to utilize digital resources, but not every writing experience must utilize those digital resources.)

C.2.4 - With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital resources to create and publish products, including in collaboration with peers.

C.2.5 - Conduct shared research and writing projects that build knowledge about a topic.

C.2.6 - Collect information from real-world experiences or provided sources to answer or generate questions.

  • Encourage students to ask questions about the virtual field trips.

Language Standards

L.2.1 - When writing or speaking, demonstrate appropriate use of:

  1. Collective nouns.

  2. Frequently occurring irregular nouns.

  3. Reflexive pronouns

  4. Past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs.

  5. Adjectives and adverbs in sentence formation.

  6. Producing, expanding, and rearranging complete simple and compound sentences.

L.2.2 - When writing:

  1. Capitalize proper nouns, including but not limited to holidays, product names, and geographic names.

  2. Demonstrate appropriate use of commas in varied communication formats (e.g., letter, email, blog).

  3. Use apostrophes to form contractions and possessives.

  4. Generalize spelling patterns.

  5. Use reference materials to self-check and correct spelling.

L.2.3 - Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

  1. Compare formal and informal uses of English.

L.2.4 - Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.

  1. Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.

  2. Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known prefix is added to a known word.

  3. Use a known root word as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word with the same root.

  4. Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words.

  5. Use glossaries and beginning dictionaries to determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases.

  6. Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts, including using adjectives and adverbs to describe.

L.2.5 - Demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings.

  1. Demonstrate understanding of words by relating them to their synonyms and antonyms.

  2. Distinguish the shades of meaning among closely related verbs (e.g., toss, throw, hurl) and closely related adjectives (e.g., thin, slender).
